Several years ago we were farming land close to a river

Several years ago we were farming land close to a river. We also had a dairy herd. For a period of five years we had wet years or dry years, which meant flooding or drought and also meant we had no crops to feed our cattle. Every day I studied the Bible Lesson, outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, and prayed, seeking divine direction for the meeting of our needs. As a result of prayer, every year we were able to purchase hay and corn, and always our milk production increased to meet this extra expense.

One year was especially challenging. We had to dismiss our grown-up son whom we had employed, as we did not have any money to pay his salary. He left reluctantly, but I assured him God would show us the way. (He was able to find other employment.) Not having our son's help meant that I had to rise every morning at five o'clock to help milk the cows, and I had to assist with the milking again at four o'clock in the afternoon. I relied on God for the strength and stamina to do all our chores. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy we read (p. 70), "The divine Mind maintains all identities, from a blade of grass to a star, as distinct and eternal." I knew that this statement was true for my husband and me, and for the cows as well.

One day a friend told my husband and me that we would be good candidates to serve as foster parents in the foster care program. My husband told me it was my decision. I remember distinctly arguing with myself that day that I had enough work to do without taking care of two teen-age boys. This was at noon. For the next few hours I continued the argument, and always the answer came, "Why not?" Finally I said, "OK, God, I'll do it."
