Safe amid the thunderings and lightnings

No matter what kind of storm we find ourselves in, our God is at hand to keep us safe.

There weren't many thunderstorms where I grew up in southern California. So it was a bit surprising to me, as a youngster of about four, to see black clouds rolling in and hear the ominous roar of thunder. My mom called for me to come into the house some distance away. I ran toward her over the clods and furrows in the newly plowed field.

After stumbling numerous times, I was about halfway home when a brilliant flash of lightning struck the ground in front of me some ten feet away. I was knocked to the ground. Remarkably, I wasn't hurt or afraid. I just quickly got up and ran the rest of the way home to my mom, and we went inside.

As was customary, my mom took me by the hand and led me to the rocking chair in the living room. I sat down in her lap, and she sang our favorite hymn. It's in the Christian Science Hymnal, No. 154. The first verse reads:
