My family became acquainted with Christian Science when my mother was nine years old. Up until that time she had suffered from bronchitis every winter and from pneumonia three times, remaining in bed for weeks at a time. The medical verdict was that probably she would not live to adulthood.

While on a summer vacation my grandmother confided her worries about this situation to a new friend whose children were exceptionally robust. The friend introduced her to the teachings of Christian Science. My grandmother began a serious study of Science, and my mother and her sister were enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School. From that time on, the recurring illnesses ceased.

Another medical opinion was that mother should not attempt to bear children. With confidence gained from her earlier healings in Christian Science, she had two children without suffering negative consequences. So my first encounter with Christian Science was being born!
