One night while I was out, a man came behind me and demanded my money. I gave it to him. But as I raised my arms to keep the man away, I saw an object in his hand and realized he was thrusting it into my side. Then he ran away. When I walked to my car to drive to a telephone to report the incident to the police, I was aware of bleeding.

At a nearby gas station there was an ambulance; I asked for assistance as I began to feel weak. I was afraid because my family didn't know where I was, and I thought I might die. Two of the wounds were near the lungs. I was told I was in shock and must try to remain calm. The police had located a suspect and brought him to the window of the ambulance for my identification. It was not the man who had assaulted me.

For a number of years I'd been a student of Christian Science. I wondered how I could apply what I knew of its teachings to aid me in this severe situation. Among other truths that came to me as I prayed was this statement from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 99): "The calm, strong currents of true spirituality, the manifestations of which are health, purity, and self-immolation, must deepen human experience, until the beliefs of material existence are seen to be a bald imposition, and sin, disease, and death give everlasting place to the scientific demonstration of divine Spirit and to God's spiritual, perfect man." The idea of spirituality being a calm current uplifted my thinking to a point where I found refuge from the aggressive claims I faced.
