Recently I read again the testimonies in the chapter called "Fruitage" in the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. They consist of accounts by people who were healed of all sorts of difficulties merely by reading the textbook. As I concentrated on those remarkable testimonies, I realized suddenly that I knew of equally wonderful experiences of healing.
In the first quarter of this century, someone gave my uncle a copy of Science and Health. He studied it avidly and was convinced that it had been inspired by God and was of immense value to the world.
I was in my first year in college and was having serious bouts of tonsillitis. I was missing many classes and falling behind the other students, so I went to a surgeon, who said that he had never seen tonsils in worse condition. A few days later I was in my uncle's home and mentioned to him that I was to have a tonsillectomy. My uncle sat quietly for a few moments and then said, "Elizabeth, would you like me to help you in Christian Science?" I replied that I would much like to be healed but that I did not know anything about Christian Science. He said that I could be healed through prayer in Christian Science even if I didn't understand Science.
