I was raised in Christian Science and attended a Christian Science Sunday School...
I Was raised in Christian Science and attended a Christian Science Sunday School until the age of twenty. Although I witnessed healings in our home while I was growing up, I did not seriously study Science until 1954, when I was facing a physical problem with my youngest son, who was then four years old.
He was attending nursery school at the time, and he suddenly developed a prominent limp. The school authorities notified me that they were concerned that this might indicate a serious contagious condition. They asked me to keep him home and to consult a physician. The child's grandparents on his father's side were not Christian Scientists, and they were very anxious that I see the foremost orthopedist in San Francisco.
Specialists agreed that my son had a disease called Legg Perthes. This is a deterioration of the upper thighbone, where it fits into the hip socket. Because part of this bone was carious, my son developed the limp. I was advised to keep him in bed and not allow him to put weight on the leg. The specialists predicted that one leg would probably be shorter than the other. They said my son would have to use crutches for a while, then have a built-up heel on his shoe.
