"Even though some mainstream churches continue to lose members, the strong secular ethos of the 1960s [in the U.S.] is clearly on the decline.

"Reflecting this renewed interest in spirituality, a 1986 Gallup Poll shows that 48 percent of Americans see religion gaining in impact on society—compared with just 14 percent who felt that way as recently as 1969...."
