When I was introduced to Christian Science a few years ago by a friend while in college, I was attracted to the beauty and logical consistency of Mrs. Eddy's writings and their promise of healing for mankind. But to accept Science for myself I knew I would have to see a convincing example of its healing power in my own life.
For many years I had been addicted to cigarette smoking. One time I had stopped by using willpower—experiencing tremendous mental and physical withdrawal pain—only to have the habit return again two years later. And during those two years I had felt an incessant craving for tobacco.
Early in my study of Christian Science I learned that freedom from the smoking habit was requisite for church membership. I felt somewhat indignant and resolved that Christian Science would have to heal the habit if the freedom from it was crucial to membership.
