Help in scary times

God is always there to help— even when we feel frightened.

Every Friday afternoon after school, I had to take a bus to my grandmother's house on the other side of town. I'm not going to tell you that I was a Little Red Riding Hood about to be accosted by a wolf. But one Friday a man sitting next to me on the bus began to touch me in a way that I knew wasn't right.

I didn't know how to stop him. To me, adults were to be obeyed. What could I do or say to stop him? I was afraid and embarrassed.

I had visited a Christian Science Sunday School a few times, though, and what I had learned there about God's allness and power and protection helped me now. I had learned in Sunday School that prayer would give me an answer. Christ Jesus had said that God is our Father, so I knew I could ask Him to help me and He would. So I prayed and listened very carefully to hear God's answer. I was so certain He would protect me that I stopped being afraid. And then I heard myself saying in a loud and clear voice, "Please don't do that."
