Sing anyway!
It's natural to feel God's love when we have a song in our heart. But what do we do when our heart is heavy?
"Sing ," says the Psalmist. "O sing unto the Lord a new song." Ps. 96:1. No options offered here. No suggestions that we wait until the time is more convenient, our mood more inspired.
The song may not be a literal one—most often it is the silent, heartfelt uplifting of our thought to God. But whatever it is, it can begin now. By His very nature, God, eternal Life, is constantly pouring out an abundance of fresh ideas and inspiration for us to use and enjoy. When we are truly listening, or sometimes when we are just going about our business, sudden new glimpses of spiritual truth take us by surprise and we entertain "angels unawares."
There are times, however, when I have felt too heavy, too lethargic, to sing at all, let alone seek out new inspiration. Then I have found the thing to do is to "sing" anyway. I use lines from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy—words I know so well, even though I feel I am not entertaining the spirit behind them. As I plug on, silently or aloud, out of these words comes the glorious inspiration I am seeking. A "new song" is what is demanded, therefore a new song is what we must be able to deliver. "He hath put a new song in my mouth," Ps. 40:3. says the Psalmist.
