Leave the tares to Truth

What can we do when our children stray from the morality we've taught them?

When our grown children adopt a life style that conflicts with the way they were brought up, we may feel deeply disturbed. What in the world, we may ask, did we do wrong? How did they get that far astray? What should we do now?

When I discovered that my son was living with someone (call her Elizabeth), I needed to wrestle with these questions. But I've found over the years that Christian Science offers not only hope but answers in such complicated situations. As we study the Bible along with the writings of Mrs. Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, we realize that we don't have to despair over our children (or give advice that nobody asked for).

Christ Jesus' parable of the tares and the wheat Matt. 13:24–30 . has always been a favorite of mine, and it was truly a guiding light in helping me to see that if we've made every effort to sow "good seed" in our children's upbringing, we can trust it to sprout and bear fruit sooner or later, no matter how many "tares" may get mixed in as it grows. Sometimes we have to be very patient with ourselves and our dear ones, and we always need to continue to love what we know to be man's real being as the likeness of God.
