My mother was introduced to Christian Science by a school medical nurse. Mother, herself a trained nurse, followed the recommendation of this woman and borrowed a copy of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy from the public library. By the time I was born, mother had left the medical profession and had become an active Christian Scientist.

I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School, and from the time I was young I sought comfort and answers to fears and questions about life in the weekly Bible Lessons from the Christian Science Quarterly. A profound fear of death and of separation from loved ones caused me to seek with special fervor for enlightenment. I found peace as I learned more of the eternal nature of Life.

While I was attending college this fear was fully and finally expunged when I read this in the Bible (Gal. 5:7): "Who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" After pondering this message I saw that there was no power outside immortal Mind—nothing to cause me to think depressing thoughts—and any suggestion that there was or could be was only a temptation to disobey what Christ Jesus called the greatest of all the Commandments: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" (Matt. 22:37).
