As a teen-ager, I found myself at odds with the religious doctrine preached from the church pulpit in the small midwestern town where I was growing up. Hellfire and damnation didn't fit my concept of God. I intuitively felt that compassion was more characteristic of God's nature.

One night after I had had a lengthy discussion on this subject with a person whom I greatly respected, I lay awake struggling and praying. Reaching out to God, I asked to be delivered from my constant questioning and confusion. At the height of my mental anguish, the room suddenly seemed filled with light. A passage from Psalms came to thought, forcefully, as though someone were speaking to me (138:8): "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me." I was left with the most marvelous sense of peace.

A few days later, out of curiosity, I took a book down from the shelf. The book had been given to my mother by my maternal grandmother many years before. Its pages were crisp and clean. The book was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
