Exploring Christian Science

If someone told you he wanted to be healed, where would you tell him to start?

A Friend had asked some questions about Christian Science. So I lent her a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. On returning the book, my friend said, "I'm sure this is right for you and your church friends who understand it, but it would be too much trouble. If I have a headache, it's much easier to take an aspirin."

This experience made me think more deeply about the purpose of Christian Science and about what impels a person to pursue the study of Christian Science—even when it seems that material remedies might be easier.

My own introduction came through my parents, who became interested in Science through a business associate. My father, who had had a longstanding stomach condition, had tried many remedies, but all to no avail. Then my father began studying Christian Science, and he was totally healed through prayer. After that I attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist— occasionally at first, at the same time relying on pills and medicines to relieve minor ailments. I was also self-conscious and fearful of many things. But I can distinctly remember reaching a point when I had an overwhelming desire for something more.
