Learning about Jesus
What did I know about Christ Jesus before I studied Christian Science? Not too much; I wasn't too fond of him. My limited knowledge included the impression that he had coldly condemned all unbelievers to hellfire. I thought our Saviour should have been a little more compassionate. And I wasn't interested in learning much more.
When I began attending Christian Science church services and studying the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I discovered I was totally mistaken about Jesus. I opened my mind and opened my eyes and found there was so much to learn about the Messiah! Not Jesus, but I, was condemning myself to a loveless existence by not knowing about and accepting God's great love for man, so clearly shown in Jesus' life and teachings.
Certainly love for the Master cannot be forced. Mechanical or fear-inspired reverence is of little use. I've come to see that real gratitude includes cherishing the life and works of our Saviour. And we cherish them best by learning to follow him.
