In May 1982 I was suddenly afflicted with symptoms of an acute inflammatory condition that affected my limbs. I called a Christian Science practitioner to aid me through prayer. Although she lived half a continent away, we were in daily touch by phone. She stayed with the case faithfully and was always ready to help when I called her during the dark hours of discouragement. She gave me comforting and healing references from the Bible and from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy.
For a time the trouble seemed to worsen and the symptoms were aggravated. I was unable to get in and out of bed without help; I could not turn over but had to sleep on my back.
I gave up my duties in my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and although I had for years faithfully attended church services, I wanted to stay home altogether, because of the great effort required to go out. However, the practitioner mentioned that attendance at church services is often a vital part of healing. She reminded me that I had frequently said that our church is a healing church. So even though I needed much help in dressing and getting in and out of cars, I did not miss a Sunday service or Wednesday testimony meeting.
