Poem June 23, 1986 Issue

The better part

PATRICIA S. SMITH

It seemed that I was needed
to play the Martha part
and I tried to do it lightly,
not with a heavy heart.

But I longed to be like Mary,
still at the Master's feet
drinking in his message,
joyous, free, complete.

Then came a healing angel
with just the help I sought:
"Martha tasks are easy
if done with a Mary thought."

No heavy burden lingers
to haunt me through the day
as I listen for my Father,
and hearing Him—obey.
