On washing both sides of the window
Housekeepers quickly learn that to have "invisibly" clean windows it is not enough to wash either the inside or the outside. You must clean both sides.
This advice has a correlative in the Christian's ongoing need for baptism, or purification of thought and life. The Discoverer of the Science of Christ, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health, "The manifestation of God through mortals is as light passing through the window-pane." And she adds, "The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality—much error—in order to become a better transparency for Truth." Science and Health, p. 295.
It is clear from the Bible record that Christ Jesus—the best possible transparency for Truth the world has known—refused to let sin, disease, or death enter his consciousness either from within or from without. He resisted and overcame inward suggestions of temptation. And he vigilantly watched to take in only that which is true of God and His man, created perfect in His likeness. Maintaining this watch led inevitably to Jesus' healing of the sick, redeeming of sinners, and raising of the dead. Through his works he proved that the divine Mind—God, pure good—is the only Truth and that God's expression, spiritual man, is the only man.
