Outweighing popular belief
When we look back to past eras we can identify certain popular beliefs that prevailed in those times. People once thought, for example, the heavens were a solid shell surrounding the sun, the earth, and all the other planets. And alchemy was taken to be a science.
Later these opinions changed. They were proved unscientific. But for a time they held sway over millions.
In our day the belief that the body is material and that this matter can act discordantly and independently of its "owner" exerts a major influence on people's lives.
