Throughout my childhood I was plagued with an inflammatory condition of the skin, medically diagnosed as eczema. Although my parents were not Christian Scientists, neither were they medically-minded. However, in their concern over my discomfort and disfigurement, they were willing to try anything to relieve me of this burden. All of the medicines, salves, and contraptions that we knew of were given a fair trial, to no avail. These included allergy tests, which were becoming popular at that time.

In early adulthood this condition gradually faded away, only to return about fifteen years later in an even more severe form. By then I had become a Christian Scientist, and I was eager to see the difficulty permanently healed through prayer.

At times the condition seemed so debilitating that I was confined to my home, sometimes for long periods. I often found comfort in these words from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 149–150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee."
