Late in the autumn of 1983 I was suddenly unable to raise...

Late in the autumn of 1983 I was suddenly unable to raise my left arm without intense pain at the top of the shoulder. Dressing, driving the car, and lying down at night became impossible. I asked for help through prayer from a Christian Science practitioner.

On the second night I sat down with my copies of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy beside me, but I was reluctant to pick up either of them. There were mental arguments of lethargy and a fear of not meeting the challenge. But when the pain increased I was forced to rouse myself mentally. Picking up Science and Health, I started to read it from the beginning. I had a sincere desire to understand it, as so many other people had done before—some of whose testimonies appear at the back of the book in the chapter titled "Fruitage." Soon this desire was greater than the wish to sleep or to be free from pain.

In the early hours of the morning this passage stood out to me clearly (p. 9): "The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of this asking? Do we pursue the old selfishness, satisfied with having prayed for something better, though we give no evidence of the sincerity of our requests by living consistently with our prayer?"
