Stop trying to fix the pipes

A rhythmic, insistent banging in the pipes greeted us as we walked into the motel room. We made an effort—twice—to change rooms. The management wasn't very helpful. And it was too late in the evening to try for another place.

It didn't seem unreasonable to expect a little quiet in which to seek the spiritual inspiration needed for the talk to be given the next day. Obviously, it was time to pray—about the pipes and the disturbance, I thought.

But gradually it dawned on me that I was being misled. A strong, unequivocal spiritual direction came, and I realized my prayer ought to be devoted to uplifting thought in regard to the next day's meeting, not to coping with some extraneous noise!
