Impedimenta
If Jesus could come today,
what would we do or say?
If he beckoned at our door
(as he once did to the four
when he told them
to follow him
to follow right then
to become fishers of men),
what would we say or do?
Would we leave our nets too?
Immediately? Straightway?
Without a backward parry?
Or would we tarry
while we turned a deal,
feasted at a meal,
enjoyed a cruise,
shopped for shoes,
played another set,
said, "Not yet, not yet"?
Etc., etc., etc.
What have we planned on this day
as the Christ calls along the way?
