When I was a teen-ager, my best friend was a regular attendant at a Christian Science Sunday School, and once in a while I went with her. At about this time, my grandmother, who was living with us, took up the study of Science. Occasionally I would read the weekly Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly), using her copies of the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It wasn't until many years later, however, that I became a serious student of this wonderful Science and then joined The Mother Church and a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.

Some years ago (since becoming a student of Science) an area of pain developed in my lower back, and I felt a lump next to my spine. Fear was great, but I told no one and decided to work out the problem through Christian Science. At first the thought of having an operation kept coming to me. But as I prayed for divine guidance and understanding, it became apparent to me that right now the law of Love, divine Principle, was operating and that was the only "operation" I needed and was what I was going to rely on. This verse from the Bible comforted me (Isa. 41:10): "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

The problem persisted. But I found this time full of opportunities to put into practice what I was studying in Science. I did not feel at first that I really knew the God I was committing myself to (I was still a new church member then). But soon I was getting to know Him better! Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 79): "Science must go over the whole ground, and dig up every seed of error's sowing." I had much to unlearn. But as I endeavored to understand God as revealed in Christian Science, there was improvement.
