In May 1983, during my Christian Science Students Association...

In May 1983, during my Christian Science Students Association meeting, the speaker invited us to read through Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, in thirty days. I felt immediately not only that I wanted to do it but that I must do it, that I needed to do it. It was the "in thirty days" that seemed so imperative.

At first I thought I would read about twenty-three pages a day, and that would get me through the book in the specified time. But once I began reading, I quickly lost count of time and pages. I literally couldn't put the book down! Words and paragraphs that had comforted me, but which had also become comfortably familiar over the years, were now saying marvelously new things to me. Often-quoted passages took on deeper meaning as I daily dedicated time and thought to reading and pondering anew this precious book. I was completely satisfied that this hungering and thirsting after the things of Spirit was the reason I had felt impelled to follow through on our speaker's recommendation. I had given no thought at all to physical healing. Interestingly, though, one did occur during this month of study.

One day, not long after beginning this reading project, I realized that I had used one of my arms in a way I had not been able to for several years—without pain or discomfort. When the thought came to try it again—to test the arm, to see if it didn't hurt—I saw this as a temptation. I sensed my need was to stick to what I had been doing, to continue praying and reading.
