About six years ago I was introduced to Christian Science

About six years ago I was introduced to Christian Science. I had recently dropped out of college, thinking there was no reason to continue. I found it difficult to find satisfying work or even to hold a job that I liked. Personality clashes seemed a frequent cause of problems. I'm sure my chronic use of alcohol and other drugs didn't help things either. I'd smoked cigarettes since the age of fifteen and had never been able to quit permanently. It was the same with the alcohol and drug use. I guess I was addicted to these things, though I didn't think of it that way at the time.

I was living in Boston when I decided one day to take a tour of the Christian Science Center. (Before that I had often strolled along the church plaza, enjoying the peaceful surroundings and occasionally speaking with the security hosts about Christian Science.) During my tour of The Mother Church I had questions about the inscriptions on the walls, which were quotations from the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings. The tour guides patiently answered these questions.

Then I asked one of the guides about the teachings of Christian Science. In retrospect, I think she must have been listening to God for her answers, for she spoke very strongly to me about how Christian Scientists depend on God for healing. She also talked to me about what it means to live the life of a Christian Scientist. I think she woke me up enough to enable me to see that I could take a stand against what I knew were some erroneous influences in my life at that point.
