The summer after I graduated from college I took a trip in Europe. At one point I was on a train traveling alone across Spain, when I began to feel quite ill with what apparently were symptoms of food poisoning. I spent a very uncomfortable night. In the morning when the train arrived in Madrid, I was so weak I could hardly move.

When the conductor told me I had to get off the train as this was the last stop, I managed to get myself and my things to the station platform and sit down. There I began to ponder the twenty-third Psalm from the Bible, reaching out to God for a sense of His presence and love. I also recalled this passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man."

Although I was very much alone in a country where I did not speak the language, I gained a calm assurance that somehow God's love would take care of me. Moving a few steps at a time, I managed to reach the entrance to the train station. There, while I was trying to explain to a policeman that I needed a place to rest, a woman next to him seemed intuitively to understand. She quickly gave me the physical support I needed and led me to her house. There she showed me to one of the guest rooms. I thanked her and in short order I got into bed, pulled my Bible and Science and Health out of my pack, and began to read the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) for that week.
