From early childhood I have always enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and hiking, even though I seemed to manifest the symptoms of oak poisoning in mild or severe forms each year after camping trips. Yet for many years, despite the pain and discomfort I suffered, I did not pray specifically about this condition. Several years ago our family purchased a summer cabin in a secluded location. I did not mention to anyone how fearful I was when I discovered that the entire area was filled with poison oak plants. But I had a rash on various parts of my body after each visit.
Then one summer during an extended stay at the cabin, I was spiritually awakened to claim daily my perfection as an idea of God's creation. I expressed gratitude for all God's beauty around me— symbolized by the trees, river, birds, and plants. And I continually and firmly declared (Gen. 1:31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."
The words "I feel God's presence with me here" kept coming to mind. I took out my copy of the Christian Science Hymnal and found that these words were part of Hymn No. 139. I sang the first verse over and over:
