Achieving a better balance

Extremes of cold and heat, flood and drought, sickness and health, in addition to escalating prices and a roller-coaster economy, show a definite need for more stability. What is the solution?

A keel and ballast are used to stabilize a ship. A condenser stabilizes a radio, while a plane needs flaps and ailerons to steady its flight. Such inventive devices do not, however, aid us in balancing the weather or the economy, or in protecting the well-being of mankind. In fact, human efforts to solve these problems by manipulating material factors often seem only to change the nature of the imbalance instead of eliminating it.

Let's consider instead the possibility that the remedy for such extremes is actually spiritual, not material. Or as the familiar words of John Flavel put it, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity."
