While visiting Israel with a friend in July of 1981, I became very ill. It was the evening before our most strenuous day of travel. We were to climb to the top of the beautiful En–gedi waterfall (En–gedi is mentioned in Song of Solomon 1:14), swim in the pool of cool water created by the falls, then travel on to the Dead Sea. This was to be followed by a three-hour visit to Masada in the noonday heat. My purpose in traveling to Israel was to do work for an educational lecture series entitled "Music of the Bible." The series was to be presented at a university in the fall. Therefore I felt that this joyous trip was a right and good activity.

I woke the morning of our trip to En–gedi with fever, weakness, and nausea. My friend would be arriving within the hour. Momentarily fear overcame me, for I knew of no one in Israel to call or see. There were no Christian Science practitioners available, no friends who were Christian Scientists to turn to for prayerful help. So I turned directly and quickly to God. He is our best friend—our immediate and ever-present help in time of need.

I thought of these words quoted by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 266): "man's extremity is God's opportunity." My next thought was from Hebrews (4:12): "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword." Here was an opportunity to prove this divine power in my experience.
