Over forty years ago, when my wife and I became Christian Scientists, I had a strong desire to make an in-depth study of Mrs. Eddy's writings.

Earlier, in a parochial school, which I had attended for eight years, we had studied and memorized passages from the Bible every day. But I had felt like a parrot, repeating words I didn't understand. Often I would protest or argue with the teacher, only to be told that my forefathers had believed it and so should I.

As I began my study of Christian Science, I decided not to memorize anything. Rather I would study, ponder, and practice this teaching until I felt it was a vital part of my life. Because of this decision, it took thirty days of my free time to learn "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (see p. 468). I was demonstrating Christian Science every day, and at last the Bible became a practical book to me.
