The gift of gifts

How vividly the memory of treasured gifts stays with us. I remember, as a second-grader, receiving a bright yellow slicker with nifty black buckles and an oversized sou'wester to go with it. It was a gift of color—brilliant color—that brought surprise and delight to a child's eyes.

As we think of loved ones and consider what to bring each one this Christmas, shouldn't we ponder prayerfully God's gift to us—His gift of the Messiah? Christ Jesus has shown to mankind for all time the way of salvation, the way to the kingdom of heaven, and this is the greatest gift of all.

Where would we be without this Way-shower? Where would we be without the profound words and powerful works of the master Christian? Like the Israelites of old, yearning for and expecting the promised Messiah, we today still have need of a Saviour—one to heed, follow, and adore.
