Healing—for the glory of God

Christian healing—healing through prayer alone—is surely one of the greatest blessings that can come into our lives. It brings us release from pain, from physical or emotional suffering, from lack, from sin. And with the physical and mental freedom we gain, spiritual healing offers solid evidence of divine power as a present reality. It proves God's dear love for each of His children. As one learns in Christian Science, the healing activity of the Christ is always made manifest for the glory of God.

Giving heartfelt praise to the Father is a mark of one's humility. And humility is an essential quality for success in healing. Mary Baker Eddy writes, "This virtue triumphs over the flesh; it is the genius of Christian Science." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 356. It is the genius of healing. Without humility one's healing work would take on too much of personal sense, or ego. And under the domination of personal sense, the healing work would no longer be essentially for the glory of God but perhaps more for the glory of the individual holding himself out as God's representative. This would be a sham, and the redeeming efficacy of humble prayer would be lost. There is no true healing without humility.

Christ Jesus is our Exemplar. When Jesus healed, it was never for his own glorification or popularity. His healing work invariably pointed the one made whole—and even those looking on—to the source of that healing, to God, because it was only in God that the people would find salvation.
