Footnote from an author
Today my article came back. The letter from the Editors of the Christian Science magazines said it was promising—but would I consider explaining the main point on page 3 a little more fully and shortening the opening paragraphs?
I'm glad to do it. Requests for revision are pretty expectable. As a matter of fact, my file of twenty-five years' worth of manuscripts consists of far more revisions than originals.
To be honest, it hasn't always been easy to understand the Editors' requests. But always it has been apparent to me later that any revision that got published was better than my original—had more interest for the reader, or sharper focus, or clearer metaphysics. This last point, in retrospect, has been the most important.
