About four years ago I was healed through Christian Science...
About four years ago I was healed through Christian Science of what appeared to be shingles. When I first discovered the condition, I was disturbed. However, I never had any sense of fear. Immediately I prayed—denying that my true being as God's image and likeness could suffer from this or any other inharmonious condition.
Christian Science teaches us that if we would heal the body, we must begin with thought. In examining my own thinking I realized that for some time I had been feeling incensed about a decision that had been made at a meeting I had attended and with which I did not agree. Here was where healing could commence—and did, as I cleared thought in this connection. It came to me that God, not a person, governed and I could safely leave with Him my desire that the best thing be done. This calmed me. I then reversed beliefs I had heard expressed about shingles, namely, accompanying pain and the so-called duration of the condition.
During the time I was prayerfully working out this problem I never had any pain, just some discomfort because of chafing from my clothing. I received help from dwelling on the thought that God's children are clothed with the garment of salvation and the robe of righteousness. I also pondered often these words about God: "His arm encircles me, and mine, and all," from Mrs. Eddy's poem "The Mother's Evening Prayer" (Poems, p. 4). These thoughts sustained me, and I was able to carry out all my usual duties at home, at church, and in the office where I worked. At the end of three weeks I was entirely free and rejoiced greatly at this proof that healing comes when we pray understandingly as taught in Christian Science.
