FOR CHILDREN
TRIVET, MY DOG,
is usually good,
but off he ran
into Admiral's Wood,
and the hours went by,
and the sun was set,
and nary a sign
of Trivet yet.
I called and called,
but I wasn't afraid;
he couldn't be lost
just ... well, mislaid,
for God, I knew,
is in every place,
and a little brown dog
in bad disgrace
would find in Him
a loving friend
who would point the way
to his journey's end.
Yes, God would have Trivet
safe in His sight,
leading him home
through the inky night.
And I was right!
For the little sinner
came bounding in
for a very late dinner.
He couldn't reveal, of course,
if he would,
what he had done
in Admiral's Wood;
but safe he'd been
for God was there,
as He is with everyone
everywhere.
