Why the Christian Scientist prays
The Christian Scientist prays to know and understand God. He has found that God is the only source of health, happiness, and life. From the Bible, and from the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, he has learned that the spiritual laws of God's power and goodness are the basis of healing. The Psalmist says, "Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God." Ps. 42:11.
Trusting God, divine Spirit, supersedes dependence on material means for healing and happiness. God, divine Principle, is the only cause of existence. Man is His perfect spiritual idea, unfallen and eternally whole. Man, as God's image and likeness, reflects God, including perfect health, incorruptible selfhood, and endless life.
When the student of Christian Science finds himself facing a difficulty, he turns to God through prayer to better discern these spiritual facts. The Christian Scientist realizes that there is no real or lasting benefit to be found in resorting to human will, to material medicine, or to psychology for the solution to his problems.
