During the summer of 1983 my family and I went to Latin America for our vacation. A week before we were to return I became ill. Some people thought I had malaria. Several of my relatives insisted that my parents give me medication. They said that if I didn't take the medicine, there would be tragic results. But our whole family chose to rely on Christian Science alone for healing, including me.
I have always been taught in the Christian Science Sunday School that whenever I have a problem, no matter how big it is, I can trust God completely. Since there was no branch Church of Christ, Scientist, nor were there any known students of Christian Science in the country where we were visiting, it was up to my family to help me through scientific prayer. (Yet it was not easy for my parents to help me, for it distressed them to see me in pain.)
My younger sister volunteered to read to me from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. She read to me for several hours. Out of all that reading, what I remember is the allegory of a court case, which can be found on pages 430-442. My sister read those pages with such spiritual strength and conviction that half an hour later I was completely well. The fever broke, and the other symptoms disappeared just as quickly. The words from the allegory proved true for me: "Divine Love had cast out fear. Mortal Man, no longer sick and in prison, walked forth, his feet 'beautiful upon the mountains,' as of one 'that bringeth good tidings'" (Science and Health, p. 442).
