At times, when Christian Science is all one has ever known,...

At times, when Christian Science is all one has ever known, there may be a tendency to take it for granted and perhaps neglect to openly acknowledge its healing efficacy. Christian Science has been my "rod and staff" since I was a child. So I feel it is high time I share a testimony of gratitude in our periodicals—publications which have meant so much to me over the years.

One healing that stands out took place over ten years ago. My husband and I had been on a cruise of the Greek islands. After our return to the port of Athens, we were to continue on a tour of the Greek mainland. However, the night before our disembarkation I became so ill that it was necessary for my husband and me to leave the tour and stay at a hotel in Athens. When we arrived I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal and requested treatment through prayer. The practitioner agreed to help me and asked that I call her back in about an hour. I soon fell asleep and woke later, completely well.

When I again phoned the practitioner, she shared this from I Corinthians (3:16): "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" It was then I realized that I had accepted some of the beliefs and superstitions associated with mythology, which I had been hearing about while touring ancient temples the previous two weeks. I had not been alert to defend myself against such aggressive mental suggestions, as the By-Law "Alertness to Duty" in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy enjoins (see Art. VIII, Sect. 6).
