Second thoughts on baptism...
I hadn't known it was all there—
all that honesty, all that innocence
(But hadn't I prayed?
hadn't I asked to see?)
I knew my brother needed more than sprinkling;
the sin soil and the guilt stains
all must be scrubbed away.
But where first to yield?
It was I who needed to wash,
to purify vision
long taught a mistaken view.
As inner sight was cleansed,
Adam mist dispelled,
sinner and sin displaced,
there we were. And with his repentance,
he, too, saw—both of us
drenched in love,
Christly-clean, serene.
