My mother was trained as a medical nurse during the First World War

My mother was trained as a medical nurse during the First World War. I was an only child, and she was always extremely concerned about my health and often gave me medicine.

My mother's sister-in-law had given her a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which my mother had read from time to time, for she had a deep interest in religion. When I was thirteen I suffered from a prolonged sinus infection. My mother decided to try Christian Science; she called a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to pray for me. I was healed in a short time and was able to return to school. My mother then began a serious study of this Science, and she enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School. As far as I was concerned, Science certainly offered the better way to be cared for, and it was a tremendous departure from the medical treatments and the attendant worries I had known.

As a college freshman I was hundreds of miles from home, studying at a music conservatory. At first I felt a great sense of inadequacy in meeting the demands being made on me, and I became discouraged and depressed. Yet the Christian Science college organization on campus provided a "home away from home." I could always seek the loving help of the organization's advisor, and there was a local practitioner who was readily available. I began to rise early in the morning and huddle by the radiator in the dorm living room to study the Bible Lesson. As a result of listening for God's guidance, I felt led to begin the study of a different instrument. I received much encouragement from my new teacher, and things became much brighter for me.
