Seven years ago I was involved in something I felt I would never be free of—smoking marijuana. (For thirteen years I had smoked it almost daily.)
It was at that time I first found out about Christian Science. Soon I began the study of Science, which demonstrates the teachings of Christ Jesus. In reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, I gained spiritual understanding and a sense of man's divine dominion. From that point on, each time I had a physical problem, I took a stand for my true identity, knowing that man is sustained by God, the divine Principle of being. Physical healings came quickly. But it was the healing of belief in material pleasure (smoking marijuana) I really sought.
I had thought that being "high" gave me freedom and pleasure. But the sense of euphoria I experienced when I smoked was far from real living. I didn't begin to truly live until I reached the point of wanting to obey the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3). To me this meant that relying on marijuana or any other material item to bring security, happiness, or joy was denying God's supremacy.
