"If you return, as I recently did, to Mark, the earliest of the four writers, you are surprised to find that so much of his narrative concerns an itinerant healer who captures hearts by making sick people whole. He casts out demons, gives sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf, loosens stuck tongues.
