LETTERS TO THE PRESS

From Christian Science Committees on Publication

The Detroit News

For those who have experienced or witnessed outstanding healings in Christian Science, it's natural to turn to God with trust and conviction in raising a family. This isn't always understood, however, by those accustomed to thinking of healing solely in a medical context.

Much of the media coverage of the Michigan court decision (reported in the Sentinel dated October 24, 1983, pp. 1829–1832) reflected this lack of understanding. Newspaper accounts tended to ignore Christian Scientists' strong record of caring for their children. Some even portrayed Christian Scientists as "hiding" neglect of children behind legal technicalities. The loving atmosphere in the vast majority of Christian Science homes was rarely mentioned.

The Committee on Publication responded in a number of letters to the press. The following commentary from a local Christian Scientist was also written to give the community a fuller picture of what this teaching really means in people's lives. The commentary, published in its entirety, appeared under the headline "Christian Science Convictions."
