When our children were small, traveling by car...

When our children were small, traveling by car sometimes seemed an event more to be endured than enjoyed. But my husband and I both liked to get out for a Sunday drive around the countryside, and occasionally for a longer trip. So we turned to prayer and did some reference work with the Concordances to the Bible and to the writings of Mary Baker Eddy before getting into the car with our family. One of the most helpful statements we considered was this one of Mrs. Eddy's (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 470): "The children of God have but one Mind." The bickering ceased, and our family truly enjoyed many trips, including one from coast to coast. The cross-country trip was from Bremerton, Washington, to Boston, and there were eight children in our station wagon. Before each day's travel we took the time to read the Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly, and to ponder the statement quoted above.

A few years after that, as a result of much deep prayer my husband moved into another line of work, where he could be of more help to others. By that time we had eleven children; yet we were all well cared for, and our daily needs were met.

Still, while my husband was just getting started there were some slack times now and then. Even so, we always managed to have something on the table, until one particular evening when it was time to fix supper and there was nothing in the house to eat. Aided by one of my eldest daughters, I set the table with our finest tablecloth and china and put a goblet of ice water at each place. That was all we had.
