Our newspaper—why?
Why should there be a Christian Science Monitor?
Clearly, an unshakable conviction lay behind its founding, a monumental purpose on the part of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Leader of Christian Science. Instructing her Board of Trustees to "start a daily newspaper at once," she wrote, just seventy-five years ago: "Let there be no delay. The Cause demands that it be issued now." Erwin D. Canham, Commitment to Freedom (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1958), p. 23 .
