"The next lessons"—a strong fortress (Part I)

Prepared for the Church Activities Department of The Mother Church. Sixth of eight articles.

Up to this point we have been thinking of the "first lessons" for the Christian Science Sunday School, indicated in Article XX of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. These "first lessons," as illuminated by Christian Science, provide the foundation for teaching the content and spiritual meaning of the Scriptures. The "next lessons," specified in the same article, aren't separated from this foundation. They continue upward and outward from it, forming a fortress of practical understanding for the pupil's lifework as a disciple of the Christ Science.

All the lessons in the Sunday School are brought together in the Manual By-Law as a complete plan for teaching every pupil, regardless of age or comprehension of Christian Science. The new pupil at nineteen needs the moral and spiritual law just as much as the new three-year-old—as do the other "nineteens" who have been in Sunday School since they were three! So there's really no time to end the first lessons and begin the next. The "first" and the "next" lessons truly enrich each other constantly through all the Sunday School years.
