My gratitude for Christian Science, and for the many blessings...

My gratitude for Christian Science, and for the many blessings I have received through the study and practice of it, is profound.

One morning I helped my wife take some ten-liter demijohns of kerosene up the wooden staircase to our attic. The stairs are about nine feet high, and there are ten steps. Underneath the stairs is our gas stove, which at that time was lit. (I realize now that it would have been wiser to turn off the stove before moving the kerosene.) As my wife handed me one of the demijohns from below the stairs, she inadvertently knocked it against a step. The glass jar, which was completely full, broke, and the kerosene spilled over the lighted stove. Immediately there was a great burst of flame, enveloping the whole area leading to the attic.

I remained standing at the very top of the stairs, surrounded by smoke and fire. The first thing I said was, "Father, what shall I do?" Instantly I remembered this from Psalm 46 (verse 10): "Be still, and know that I am God." Over and over again I declared aloud that God is the only power and that I had nothing to fear. Then I looked to see if I could escape through a window that opened onto the roof. But the window was covered with a grille, and it was impossible to get out that way.
