Sally and the ball

It was a bright and sunny morning, but Wendy was very sad. She didn't feel like getting up. She didn't feel like going out to play with her friend, Richard. She didn't feel like doing much of anything.

When she finally went downstairs, Daddy could see that something was wrong. So he asked what was the matter. At first, Wendy didn't want to tell him. But finally she said, "I wish I had a shiny new tricycle like Richard's. Mine is all old and scratched up, and it's got dents all over it."

Daddy's answer surprised Wendy. He didn't talk about tricycles at all. Instead he asked Wendy if she'd ever heard the story of "Sally and the ball." Wendy said, "No. What's the story about?" So Daddy told her this story:
