Love unpossessed

Once love was in a guarded box,
A jewel I'd hid away,
A precious object—mine, possessed.
I wanted it that way.

But then—a thief! An empty box.
The treasured jewel gone.
I'd failed to cage eternal love
As I would fail to catch the dawn.

That day, the saddest of my life,
Turned out to be the best,
For then I looked away from earth
From all I had possessed

And found the love that comes from God
And never can be lost;
It heals all wounds and can't be sold
Or bought at any cost.

This love can never be contained,
Is never mine alone,
But it's God's gift to all of us
To share with everyone.
